How Do Hair Relaxers Work?

Hair relaxers are popular cosmetic products for people who wish to straighten wavy or curly hair. Many products contain hair-relaxing ingredients, including shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, gels, sprays, and treatments.

Chemical hair straighteners contain a complex mix of ingredients, sometimes including formaldehyde, lye, and phthalates, which are also used in many plastics. These chemicals break down the bonds that make curly hair curly. After these bonds break, the user holds their hair in a straight pattern, and the bonds reform.

Injuries Resulting From Using Hair Relaxers

In a lawsuit filed in 2022, a Missouri woman claimed that hair straightening products from L’Oréal caused her uterine cancer, which led to a full hysterectomy. The suit claims that L’Oréal knew its products were dangerous in 2015 but continued to market them.

Some common signs and symptoms of uterine cancer include severe pain, unexplained weight loss, changes in bladder or bowel habits, lumps under the skin, or other unusual physical characteristics.

A study from the National Institutes of Health suggested a link between hair straightening chemicals and a higher risk of uterine cancer, particularly among Black women. The study followed over 33,497 women for over a decade. It concluded that women who frequently used hair straightening products were over twice as likely to develop uterine cancer compared to women who did not use hair straightening products. Over 60 percent of users in the study identified as Black women, many of whom used the products since early childhood.
