Does the Use of Chemical Hair Relaxers Cause Cancer?
As reported by About Lawsuits, 35-year-old Tamara Sigars has filed a lawsuit against the makers of Dark & Lovely, Optimum, Motions after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. According to her complaint, she had used the chemical hair relaxer since she was 16 years old. The product allegedly contains dangerous toxins including endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that have been linked to an increased risk of cancer.
As a result of her diagnosis, Sigars had to have a hysterectomy and undergo chemotherapy. She joins a growing group of women that have reportedly suffered irreparable harm after using Dark & Lovely and similar hair relaxers. It is expected, according to About Lawsuits, that thousands of women will file similar lawsuits against the makers and distributors of these products in 2023.

It is believed that chemical hair relaxers contain a number of dangerous toxins including endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), phthalates, formaldehyde, and parabens. Many of the chemicals found in hair relaxing products are known human carcinogens, meaning they are cancer-causing toxins.
Research indicates that chemical hair relaxers may cause adverse health conditions. A study by the National Institutes of Health found a link between the frequent use of these products and an increased risk of cancer. Several manufacturers and distributors have been named in recent lawsuits with many more expected to be filed in the future.
What Manufacturers Have Been Named in Hair Relaxer Lawsuits?
Some of the largest beauty product manufacturers in the world have been named in lawsuits related to these potentially deadly products.
In the most recent lawsuit, Sigars filed a claim against:
- L’Oreal
