Federal Lawsuit Filed Against Cosmetics Giant for Toxic Hair Relaxer

Link Between L’Oreal Hair Straightener Products and Cancer
According to multiple reports including the Daily Mail, Jennifer (“Jenny”) Mitchell was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 when she was 28 years old. As a result of the cancer, Jenny had to have a hysterectomy removing any chance that she could naturally conceive a child.
A federal lawsuit filed in an Illinois court alleges that her cancer was caused by repeated use of a chemical hair straightener. Legal documents indicate that Mitchell used the L’Oreal products since 2000. The hair relaxers reportedly contained toxic substances known as “phthalates and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals” that can cause cancer after repeated exposure. Other defendants named in the lawsuit include Carson Inc, Strength of Nature Global, Dabur USA, and Namaste Laboratories.
NIH Warns About Increased Cancer Risk
The lawsuit comes only one week after a study released by the National Institutes of Health found an increased risk of cancer for women who regularly use chemical hair straightening products. In some cases, a woman may be twice as likely to develop uterine cancer after using chemical hair straighteners.
Currently, a class action lawsuit is being filed against cosmetic companies such as L’Oreal that continue to sell these reportedly dangerous and defective products. The products were found to contain a number of known human carcinogens (cancer-causing) including formaldehyde. In addition to an increased risk of cancer, these products may impact a woman’s fertility and cause several other health problems.
How We Can Help
At Fibich, Leebron, Copeland, & Briggs, we can help file a hair relaxer lawsuit on your behalf if you frequently used these products and were later diagnosed with cancer. Our lawyers will work tirelessly to help you get the compensation you deserve.
Many chemical hair straighteners containing dangerous toxins remain on the market, resulting in irreparable harm to thousands of women nationwide. Many women have to undergo surgery to remove the cancer from their body and prevent it from spreading. As in Ms. Mitchell’s case, the surgery resulted in a hysterectomy and prevented her from being able to carry a child in the future.
