Paragard IUD Litigation Update

On October 15, at the Mass Tort Made Perfect conference, Attorney Copeland will be giving an update on the Paragard IUD Litigation.

Earlier this year, attorney Erin Copeland was selected by District Judge Leigh Martin May to lead the Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) against the makers of Paragard intrauterine devices, Teva Pharmaceuticals. Over 100 cases were consolidated in the massive lawsuit, which is being heard out of the Northern District of Georgia.

The Dangers of Paragard Removal

The intrauterine birth control device was marketed as the only 100% hormone-free IUD. Reports from plaintiffs indicate that the “T-shape” device can easily break apart during removal, causing severe injury. The fractured device can cause perforation or become lodged in the uterus, requiring surgery to remove and increasing the risk for life-threatening infection.

It is alleged that Paragard manufacturers knew that the copper-covered device was defective and prone to breakage during removal but failed to warn medical professionals or consumers about the danger. Thousands of women have filed complaints with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration about the harm they suffered.

Dedicated Advocate, Proven Results

Attorney Copeland has earned a reputation for her dedicated advocacy of women injured by defective medical devices and dangerous drugs. Prior to being appointed to the Paragard MDL, she was chosen to serve on the Executive Committee for the Essure consolidated litigation. Her tireless work helped secure a $1.6 billion settlement against Essure manufacturer Bayer.

In addition, Mrs. Copeland was appointed to the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in the Pradaxa federal multidistrict litigation and the federal transvaginal mesh multidistrict litigation. In the Pradaxa MDL, she served as the State-Federal Liaison Counsel. She is licensed to practice law in multiple jurisdictions, including the United States Supreme Court.
