About The Texas Board of Legal Specialization
Established in 1974, the Texas Board of Legal Specialization is the only governing board in the state of Texas with the authority to certify attorneys in specific legal specialties. At the behest of the State Bar of Texas, the Supreme Court of Texas established the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in order to distinguish qualified lawyers as specialists in their respective fields.
Of the 100,000+ attorneys currently licensed to practice law in the state of Texas, only about 7,400 are board certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
The Board recognizes specialists in one of any 24 select areas of law, including personal injury trial, labor and employment, consumer and commercial, and several others. However, an attorney must truly be proficient in their field in order to earn a Board Certified stamp of approval.
How Do Attorneys Specialize?
All board certified attorneys must have worked in their legal specialty for 3 years, and must have practiced law for at least 5 years total. The Texas Board of Legal Specialization only grants board certification to individuals who have shown great skill in their legal practice and have noteable professional achievements in that area.
In order to become certified as a Board Approved attorney, qualifying lawyers must first apply to the organization and complete and approved course. A Texas Board of Legal Specialization analyst will review the applicant’s file and remove applicants who do not qualify, leaving only the most skilled attorneys to take specialty area examinations. The specialty examinations take an entire day and test applicants on relevant skills and knowledge applicable to their chosen legal specialty.
Board certified attorneys may not be called such because of a one-time achievement. A specialist in their field will continue their legal education through Board approved course attendance and additional certifications.
